Access Series set for Norway

The LET Access Series will break new ground when the inaugural Ladies Norwegian Challenge takes place at Losby Golf and Country Club near Oslo from July 4-6.

The stunning venue, situated just 20km east of the city centre, hosted the SAS Masters on the Ladies European Tour in 2007, won by Suzann Pettersen.

The tournament is expected to attract a strong field of entries, headed by the likes of home challenger Marianne Skarpnord, with a prize fund of €25,000 on offer to the 126 competitors.

The magnificent 18-hole championship golf course at Losby features large greens and a variety of water hazards, with several holes set amongst coniferous woodland terrain.

The Ladies Norwegian Challenge will be the sixth Access Series event on the 2012 schedule, taking place in a prime summer slot after the GolfStream Ladies Open in Ukraine and before the Women’s Bank Open in Finland.

Diane Barnard, Tour Director, LET Access Series, said: “We are delighted to be staging the first LET Access Series event in Norway, this time at a golf course which some of the players will know well.

“Losby has proved a fantastic venue for golf and is sure to impress the players. The location is stunning and the course is sure to provide a stern test. We are all looking forward to a successful collaboration with the Norwegian Golf Federation.

“The achievements of World No.2 Suzann Pettersen and Marianne Skarpnord will have no doubt inspired a new generation of players in Norway and we look forward to discovering new talent at the Ladies Norwegian Challenge this year.”

Frode Scheie, the Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF) sports director, commented: “For Norwegian players at the outset of their professional careers, the LET Access Tour is the most important tournament series”, also pointing out the importance of climbing the world rankings when aiming for the 2016 Olympic Games.

About the LET Access Series:

The LET Access Series (LETAS) launched in 2010 as the official feeder tour to the Ladies European Tour. The objective of LETAS is to provide greater playing opportunities for female professional golfers. All female professional golfers and amateurs with a handicap of 3 or better are eligible for membership of LETAS, providing they are over 18 years of age. The top three players on the 2012 LETAS Ranking will earn membership of the Ladies European Tour for the 2013 season, while players in fourth to 15th positions will have the opportunity to progress to the final stage of LET Qualifying School, thereby skipping the first qualifying event. If the top three players are already exempt for the Ladies European Tour then the cards will be available to the next best players inside the top 10 on the 2012 LETAS Ranking. If a player in fourth to 15th position is already exempt to Final Qualifying School for the 2013 Ladies European Tour season, then the next non-exempt player down to 30th position on the 2012 LETAS Ranking will be offered a place at LET Final Qualifying School. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe breaks ground on Tucson’s newest golf course -

Desert oasis-style course to feature Notah Begay III design & Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf

Tucson’s Pascua Yaqui Tribe held a ground breaking ceremony today on its newest amenity, an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, situated directly south of Casino Del Sol Resort’s AVA Amphitheater. The golf course, named “Sewailo,” meaning “flower world” in the Yaqui language.

“This groundbreaking is one of of many exciting milestones we plan to recognize as we continue to offer the highest quality amenities to the guests of Casino Del Sol Resort,” said Wendell Long, CEO of Casino Del Sol Resort.

Large lakes, flowing streams, waterfalls and plush landscaping blend with the desert environment to create a wonderful “oasis” effect. The course transitions through both desert terrain and the oasis environment, while taking full advantage of the surrounding mountain views to create an exciting and unique golfing experience. The course winds seamlessly through gently rolling terrain, with a mix of wonderfully strategic holes that combines a full range of shot values and aesthetics. The course is designed to be challenging, memorable and enjoyable for players of all levels.

In addition to the breathtaking grounds, Sewailo will also offer the first Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf in Arizona. It is not often that when golf gear comes into the BunkerShot.com office in the winter that we actually get to try it right away. Given that this alleged “global climate change” has dropped down upon us one of the warmest NY winters that I have experienced I was very excited to try out the new Oakley Ciphers when they arrived.

The Oakley Cipher weighs in at 260 grams, or 9.17 ounces. The shoe does not have traditional golf spikes, which allows for a lighter shoe that positions the golfer closer to the ground for better balance. This does not mean that traction is lost. The Oakley Cipher uses patented “nanospike” technology thanks to ceramic-alumnia foot plates at the bottom of the shoe.

With no breaking in what so ever I wore the new spikes right out onto the course twice to walk 9 holes each time. The initial feel was amazing. They are indeed light to the feel but they are also absolutely comfortable giving me no pressure point pain at all. I am a big fan of walking around in flip-flops and barefoot and these spikes made me feel right at home. I felt very grounded with no slippage even in this wet winter golf testing.

The spikes will be available April 1st and I recommend that you definitely consider them.

World Number One Swings into World’s Biggest ‘Bunker’

‘Giants of Golf’ in a Giant of a Desert

World number one, Luke Donald, will have no fears about playing out of the sand at Abu Dhabi Golf Club for this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, after the Englishman successfully tackled the world’s biggest ‘bunker’ – a mammoth dune in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Desert, the world’s largest uninterrupted sand mass.

In Liwa, Donald was joined by triple and defending Abu Dhabi champion, Martin Kaymer, as the awe-struck pair stood amongst 250-foot sand dunes at the entrance to Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) - a desert made famous by British explorer Wilfred Thesiger’s 1940’s crossing and immortalized in the timeless book: Arabian Sands.

“Well that was no ordinary sand-trap!” said Donald, who became the first player in history to top both the PGA and European PGA money lists last year. “When you spend the vast majority of your time on the course, it’s easy to forget that Abu Dhabi is surrounded by such an enchanting desert landscape. Truly, I was awestruck at the gigantic enormity of it all.”

Kaymer and Donald headline an Abu Dhabi field that is the strongest ever assembled at a Middle East tournament.
