Wonderland Publications (www.wonderlandpublications.com) has announced the availability of the worlds most luxurious and unique golf publication, called Golf. This handmade, 18 chapter, 140 page masterpiece is truly the ultimate gift for the golfer or historian who has everything. ‘Golf’ is an editorialized art collection that tells the story of the game, the terrain and where it’s all going.
Colin Montgomerie, Ryder Cup winning captain and golf course designer, served as the resident professional during the four years of crafting. Co-creators Paul Skellett and Simon Weitzman drew from their fine art, brand creation, TV and filmbackgrounds and incorporated contributions from over fifty individuals worldwide in the golf industry including voices from the PGA, course architects, historians, coaches, caddies, commentators and historical societies. Additionally, during the four year project, the creators have painstakingly restored many rare and previously unseen archive images and created hundreds of pieces of artwork to sit alongside the 105,000 word editorial. According to co-author, Weitzman, “Our mission has been to create a satirical, informed work of prose and art, designed to capture the true spirit of the game from it’s formative growth, through to the realities of the recent financial depression, and on towards new and exciting horizons.”
At an impressive size of over 3 feet wide, 18 inches high and 5 inches thick, the 82 pound ‘Golf’ is a museum grade art portfolio. The paper is hand torn and the folio is bound into an extremely rare 400 year-old Russian Hide leather cover. It is embellished with ornate gold blocking and elaborate gold furnishings. As a limited edition, there are only 10 that will ever be made and all are signed and numbered by the artists and Colin Montgomerie. It is delivered in an oak slipcase box and can be purchased for $48,000 USD (www.wonderlandpublications.com).
For those who may find the folio price tag too dear or the size too large to read in bed, there are also 2,100 Collector Edition copies available of ‘Golf’ available for pre-order. Each is bound in leather, gold blocked and gilded and delivered in a leather and silk slipcase. Until July 2011, these will be available for $562 and thereafter, $630. Each Collector Edition copy comes with a special limited edition mini-print, signed by the authors and artists. Individual full sized pages from the Limited Edition folio are also available as art pieces. Each artwork is printed to the same standard as the original in the folio and on the same museum grade paper. The artwork is limited to 140 numbered and signed pieces and can be purchased for a cost of $289. Finally, a range of mini-art pages have been created and limited to 200 numbered and signed pieces which can be purchased for $115 (www.wonderlandpublications.com).
“We are pleased at the interest from resorts and clubs in regards to owning the giant folio as a tournament trophy. However, it has always been our intention to make a version of the folio available as a limited edition publication to others as well, which is why we have produced the Collector Edition and individual artwork pieces. ‘Golf’ is one of those publications that can give people something beautiful at a price point they can afford.” says Weitzman.
Co-author Skellett says, “Like a great golf course, this publication takes the reader on a journey that can be discovered and rediscovered over and over again throughout its 18 chapters.” ‘Golf’ is designed to entertain, enchant and amuse the lifelong golfer, the golf enthusiast, as well as reaching out to those who are new to the game, interested in the landscape it occupies, or simply fascinated by the art and culture that have influenced the game’s evolution over the centuries.
As there are only 2,100 of the $562 editions available, collectors will have to move quickly to secure this unique tome. For more information, please visit www.wonderlandpublications.com or order directly at www.wonderlandfineart.co.uk.
