The Miura Experience, Part II

After the technical data was gathered from my fitting and club fitting session, I chose the Miura blade as my “weapon of choice”, matched with a Tour Concepts shaft. The test model that I tried with Mike Fix, authorized Miura club fitter and all-around golf genius, yielded shots that were purer than Ivory soap. What Mike didn’t tell me about was the part that is the hardest for the customer…waiting for the finished iron set to arrive. The last time I was that excited about receiving new it was being delivered by a guy in a red suit. The anticipation of seeing what the finest irons in the world would do in the hands of an enthusiastic mid-handicapper like myself was almost more than I could take…almost. Finally the day arrived, and I got the call to come to the indoor fitting center in Suburban Washington, DC to receive the new irons. This was the first time I’d seen a full set of Miura irons in a row. The effect is something like looking at the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes or perhaps the parking lot in front of the local Ferrari dealership. The sleek design of the Miura club head is always a joy to behold, and now it was multiplied times eight! The sound of Mike’s voice roused me from my revelries. He put the 7-iron in my hand (with a strip of impact tape on the bottom to check lie and loft) and turned on his bank of monitors to see how the club performed. I set up to the ball and immediately felt comfortable with the setup of the club (1 inch extension and 3 degrees upright for me). A brief flash of “unforgiving blade” fear flashed through my mind, but I brushed it aside and pulled the trigger. The impact was like hitting a week-old marshmallow, sending the ball sailing into the netting. Mike checked the impact tape; perfect result, with a little blue mark right at the center of the club. If the mark had been towards the toe or heel of the blade, he should have adjusted my lie angle to give the proper result. Next the 9-iron…a soft thwack and another perfect lie angle. And so it went through the entire set. Even more impressive than the feel were the results from the Trackman radar monitor. I was hitting every club dead straight and from 10 to 15 yards further than my previous irons. Mike Fix being a rather reserved sort, I suppressed the urge to embrace him. But I did actually giggle a little bit. Next on the list: take the clubs for a test drive on the course against my newly overmatched friends.
