Texas Golf Association Father-Son Championship -- Round 1Posted by Tony Vaught in sports , pga , golf |
Bryan, TX A perfect combination of beautiful weather and immaculate course conditions created an excellent setting for Day 1 of the Father-Son Championship at Miramont Country Club. For a brief period skies gave an intimidating stare, but quickly moved on when it realized what great golf was taking place below.
The championship is one of the TGA’s most popular events as it offers an opportunity for father and son to represent their family’s skills on the state’s highest of level of amateur competition. The event is composed of 6 flights, all based on handicap indexes. The Championship flight plays a Gross Four-Ball format. The other 5 flights (Trevino, Kite, Crenshaw, Nelson, and Hogan) play a Net-Four Ball handicap format. As unforgiving as the Bermuda rough is at Miramont, everyone gets an opportunity to contribute to their team score.
The Championship flight is based on players with a team handicap index (HI) of up to 4.9. The teams of Craig and Jordan Rumora and Wayne and Ben Lundquist both shot 65 for the Round 1 lead. Andy and Steven Williams posted a 5-under 67.
The Trevino flight is based on players with a team handicap index (HI) between 21 and 36. The duo of Chris and Richard Lowe posted the low for the day with a 62, pardon the pun. A few strokes behind is the team of Chris and Eric Cornell in with a 65. Other top spots include the teams of Jim and Mark Copeland and Greg and Ira Kisver who both shot 67 in their opening rounds.
The Kite flight is based on players with a team HI between 14 and 20. Brad and Johnny Lawrence lead their flight with a 66 today. In with a score of 68 is the team of Donald and Thomas Fowler. Close behind them was the Jerry and Troy Biesel combo in with a 69.
The Crenshaw flight is based on players with a team HI between 12 and 13. The teams of Brett and Doug Chandler and Brannon and Cullen Smith are tied for the lead with a score of 67. Knocking at their door is the team of Steve and Steve II Reid with a score of 68.
The Nelson flight is based on players with a team HI between 9.6 and 11. Max and Mike Miller shot an impressive 63 to lead the group. Other impressive scores were posted by David and Turner Hoff with a 64 and Bob and William Haslam with a 65.
The Hogan flight is based on players with a team HI between 5.9 and 11. Charlie and Fin Ewing lit up the course today with a 10-under 62! Four other groups are a 7-under. Darrel and Tim Bowe, Blake and Gary Tolbert, Tim and Robert Mills, and Brad and Trey Hisle all shot 65 in their opening rounds.
As the forecast is looking better and better each day the weekend promises some great golf to be had. Tee times for Round 2 will begin at 8:00 on Saturday.
The Texas Golf Association would like to express its sincerest thanks to the entire membership and staff of Miramont CC for their continued support of amateur golf by hosting the 2010 State Father-Son.

Goydos records a 59 - only the 4th one in PGA TOUR historyPosted by Tony Vaught in sports , PGA Tour , pga , golf |
SILVIS, Ill. — After four months of pretty lousy play on the PGA Tour, Paul Goydos managed to turn things around just a bit — he shot a 59.
“Today was a nuclear bomb,” Goydos said. “I don’t know where it came from. If I knew that, I wouldn’t be able to touch it.”
Perhaps just as amazing, Goydos held only a one-stroke lead Thursday at the John Deere Classic. Defending champion Steve Stricker shot a 60, making for the two lowest scores ever in a single round at a PGA event.
With the par-71 TPC Deere Run course softened by three days of intermittent rain, golfers were expected to go low. But no one could have expected this.
“You’re 12 back before you even step on the first tee. That’s tough to swallow,” Stricker said. “That’s why you’ve got to get into a little different thought process and get in your own little world and chip away.”
Goydos has missed almost has many cuts as he’s made this year. He led the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February by ? a stroke with five holes to play, only to tumble out of contention with a quadruple-bogey 9 on No. 14.
“I’ve been very good at playing poorly now for the last 10 tournaments or so,” Goydos said.
Stricker’s second shot on the par-4 18th bounced on the green and appeared to be heading for the cup. But it curled at the last second, leaving him an easy 2-footer for the 11th birdie of his round.
Stricker kept alive his hopes of catching Goydos by salvaging par on No. 14 after hitting into a bunker left of the green.
Goydos, who hasn’t won on the tour since 2007 and has just two victories overall, needed just 22 putts to dominate the soggy course.
It was the first 59 on the tour since David Duval’s memorable final round helped him win the 1999 Bob Hope Classic.
Goydos is the first to shoot 59 on a par 71.
Duval finished with a 67 Thursday.
“The score is kind of the golden egg,” Duval said. “You have to hit shots, you have to hit putts. Regardless of where it’s done or who does it, it’s amazing.”
Goydos birdied every hole on the back nine except for No. 15, where he holed a 6-foot par putt to keep a sub-60 in sight.
He finished off with three birdies, the last one from 7 feet to join the most exclusive club in golf.
Goydos raised his putter to a roar from the crowd when his 59th shot fell into the cup, and he high-fived his way to the clubhouse.
“It’s almost a mythical number in our game,” Goydos said. “I think that is a goal in your career, to break 60,” he said. “When I look back and I’m not playing anymore. ... I’ve got 10 holes-in-one. I’ve got three double-eagles. Fifty-nine is one of those things I’m going to look at and say, ‘That’s pretty cool.’”

Riverhill, Southern Golf Properties Roll the Red CarpetPosted by Tony Vaught in travel , sports , products , PGA Tour , pga , lpga , golf gps , golf courses , golf clothing , golf cart accessories , golf apparel company , golf , architecture |
When Southern Golf Properties partners John Junker and Bryan Gathright took ownership of Riverhill, it was clear there were repairs, updates, and major renovations needed. The storied facility, which includes the historic Gus F. Schreiner home, a course designed by the Lord Byron Nelson and the great Joe Finger, as well as clubhouse and pro shop, weren't going to get by on paint and tape.
Now that Southern Golf Properties has been in charge for nearly a year, the plan is to incorporate the new while still celebrating the old, renovating locker rooms, eating areas and the golf centers with modern touches.
"We're very excited to bring Riverhill back as the Country Club it deserves to be." said Junker.
The par-72 layout, currently 6,958 yards at its longest, will soon be stretched by another 350 yards by deeper tee boxes to be constructed on five holes. Key changes to the bunkers, fairways, and greens will bring back the key that Nelson and Finger wanted - a shot makers course; using every club you carry.
The changes are part of the strategic plan to showcase Riverhill - the home of Southern Golf Properties - to everyone in the south Texas region.

Valero Texas Open Makes History (again)Posted by Tony Vaught in travel , sports , PGA Tour , pga , golf |
Round 2 of the Valero Texas Open was pushed to Saturday when nearly 5 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period in San Antonio, Texas.
The new TPC San Antonio was not in playing condition at all on Friday, however was ready to go at 7:10am on Saturday. Based in large part on the construction aspect, the drainage was amazing. However, the grounds crew rolled out at about 3:ooam that morning to go over every bit of the course ensuring play would be possible.
Though the official cut of the tournament was +1, those players that were at that score were labeled as "DNF" (did not finish), so that the TOUR could ensure completion on Sunday afternoon. Tour officials ruled that the top 60 and ties would be in, officially.

As the saying goes -- Everything is bigger in Texas! This holds true for the thunderstorms as well. On a day that was to be the moment that players jockey to make the cut, the announcement came late in the afternoon that play for today was suspended.
Thousands of volunteers, hundreds of media, players, caddies, families, and of course Tour officials found various things to keep them occupied during the day. When the call was finally made around 2:30pm local time, there was still plenty of work to do by many of the volunteers as well as the Golf San Antonio staff. At that time, they were still trying to figure out if the trademark concert series would still go on. "We're not sure about the concert at this point. We hope to know something soon though. " was what Monica Villareal, Manager of Sponsor and Volunteer Relations for Golf San Antonio, told me.
The spacious J.W. Marriott Hill Country Resort has plenty of room to move the concert(s) indoors, however with some concurrent functions scheduled, it would be a long shot.
As for the tournament itself, the second round will begin at 7:10am local time on Saturday, and the plan is to possibly do the third and fourth rounds on Sunday. If the weather is still an issue, a Monday finish is possible.

TPC San Antonio Hosts Valero Texas OpenPosted by Tony Vaught in travel , sports , PGA Tour , pga , golf |
This week on the PGA Tour is the Valero Texas Open. One of the oldest PGA Tour events to be held in the same city (San Antonio), this year marks the begining of a new era. After 14 years of being part of the Fall Series, and one (2009) spring date, the tournament has moved from the Resort Course at La Cantera to the new TPC San Antonio.
With the event's move to the new facility has come a stronger 156-player field. Notably, Ernie Els, the tour's current leading money-winner and FedEx Cup points leader, Vijay Singh, J.B. Holmes and Adam Scott are in San Antonio for the first time.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem traveled to San Antonio on Wednesday to survey the latest addition to the tour's lineup of TPC properties. Finchem stated he had talked to several players and the early reaction was positive.
With the move to a new venue comes, of course, the departure from another. I spoke briefly yesterday with Tony Cherone, GM of the Westin La Cantera Resourt. Cherone said "We are very busy ourselves, even though the tournament has moved on. We're focusing on many new and exciting things down the road."
Today brings the start of the second round -- which has been delayed for about 5 hours due to heavy thunderstorms.
