Inaugural LPGA Taiwan Scheduled In October 2011 @LPGAPosted by Rob Walters in sports , pga , golf |
The inaugural LPGA Taiwan has been scheduled to take place in Taoyuan, Taiwan from 27 – 30 October 2011 at the prestigious Sunrise Golf & Country Club with a world-class field of LPGA professionals competing for US$2 million in prize money.
The Golf Association of Republic of China (GAROC), the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) and event promoter IMG today announced that they will, for the first time in Taiwan’s history, bring an LPGA-sanctioned event to Taiwan, with the highest prize money offered in any women’s tournament ever staged in Taiwan.
The inaugural tournament will feature the top 80 LPGA members from the Official Money List, along with 10 host country exemptions. The 72-hole stroke play event with no cut will ensure that Taiwan golf fans do not miss watching all the LPGA players in action over the four days of the tournament, including the weekend.
“Taoyuan County is very honoured to bring the first LPGA-sanctioned event to Taoyuan, where the County’s pride Tseng Yani was born, and also trained at the host venue, Sunrise Golf & Country Club,” said John Wu, Mayor of Taoyuan County.
“The tournament will bring new excitement for the development of the women’s game in Taiwan,” said Tien-Ya Hsu, President of the GAROC. He noted that this is a perfect timing for Taiwan to host an LPGA tournament, with the recent victory from Tseng at the RICOH Women’s British Open.
“Our vision is to promote the popularity of golf in Taiwan through staging an LPGA tournament, and also to recognize the achievements of all the Taiwan women’s golfers actively playing on the LPGA Tour, including Candie Kung, Teresa Lu and Amy Hung,” added President Hsu.
“We’re eager to showcase the greatest women’s athletes in the world to our growing global fanbase, and certainly the LPGA Taiwan tournament provides an ideal opportunity to do just that,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “We express our gratitude to our friends at GAROC, and anticipate a collaborative relationship that enables us to fulfill the LPGA vision in Taiwan to inspire, empower, educate and entertain.”
The LPGA is recognised as the official governing body for professional women’s golf and has been making inroads in Asia. The selection criteria of LPGA, which has been staging more events in this part of the world as well as having a global reach, will enable IMG to secure the best international playing field. A stellar line up can be expected come October 2011.
“IMG prides itself in playing an integral role in developing the sport globally and our footprint of LPGA tournaments in Asia has been growing from strength to strength. We are excited that after staging many international men’s tournaments in Taiwan especially at Sunrise Golf and Country Club, we can finally bring to Taiwan a world class women’s tournament,” said Robbie Henchman, Senior Vice President of IMG.
“With the support of GAROC and the LPGA, we can be assured that this inaugural event will deliver the best player field of international and local players in women’s tournaments in the golf history of Taiwan.”
More details about the event, including star players and local qualification criteria, will be announced closer to the event.

SKLZ Introduces The Power Wedge Training AidPosted by Rob Walters in sports , pga , golf |
SKLZ, the industry leader in sports skill development products and equipment, today announced it has introduced the Power Wedge as part of the company’s line of golf training aids. The new SKLZ Power Wedge is designed to aid in proper weight transfer and timing during the golf swing and can be used with all clubs.
The Power Wedge is a compact device that is positioned underneath the golfer’s right heel, and emits a properly sequenced “click” sound as the club passes through impact when the golfer correctly shifts his or her weight to their front foot.
As with a normal wedge, The Power Wedge prevents swaying back to avoid an off-balance ball strike, but its unique auditory feedback also helps synchronize the legs, hips and arms. “Great golf swings are all about solid footwork and body sequencing,” said Greg Shoman, vice president of marketing, SKLZ.
“The Power Wedge is so easy to use and so effective in developing proper weight shift, that instructors really love using this training aid during their lessons.
It provides instant feedback and instant results.” The SKLZ Power Wedge is included in the SKLZ Staff Program Package, which is currently being used by over 600 PGA professionals and instructors.
The Power Wedge includes a detailed instructional drill card and retails for $14.99. For a video presentation of Power Wedge instructions and drills, visit SKLZ.tv. SKLZ products are designed to fit into four training categories: Accuracy, Distance, Putting and Practice, allowing players to focus on the specific areas of their game that need work. The Power Wedge can be found in the Distance training category on the SKLZ website at www.SKLZ.com.

Bumper year for Old Course bookingsPosted by Rob Walters in sports , pga , golf |
St Andrews Links received a record-breaking number of tee-time applications for the Old Course yesterday (1 September) following the staging of the 2010 Open Championship at the venue earlier this year.
The Advance Reservations process for play on the Old Course and The Castle Course opened at 10am BST and within 20 minutes more than 1,500 email applications had been received by St Andrews Links Trust.
The Links Trust, which manages and maintains the seven public golf courses at the Home of Golf, invite applications for tee times a year ahead due to the continued level of demand to play on the famous Links.
‘The Old Course attracts a huge amount of interest, largely due to the history and tradition associated with the Home of Golf’, said Alan McGregor, Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Trust. ‘However this attention intensifies during the staging of the Open Championship, resulting in a bumper amount of applications for tee-times the following year. This is great news for tourism in St Andrews and Scotland.’
For more information about booking any of the seven St Andrews Links courses please contact the Reservations Department atreservations@standrews.org.uk or on 0044 1334 466718.

Charity Ticket Program to Benefit Local Non-Profit Organizations
The AT&T Championship has announced a new, creative incentive for spectators attending this year’s tournament at Oak Hills Country Club from October 25-31. The PGA Champions Tour event will be the first ever in San Antonio to offer free admission during the week of the golf tournament courtesy of Snapple – and attendance figures will net up to $15,000 for a local charitable organization.
Twenty local charitable groups will take part in this unique ticket distribution program. Each of the participating groups will receive 1,500 one-day passes to distribute to the San Antonio public. Participating groups will have their own coded tickets and each ticket redeemed during the days of Championship competition (Friday through Sunday) will count as one point toward the respective group’s total. At the end of the tournament, the group accumulating the most points will earn a $15,000 donation for their designated charity. There will also be a structured tier donation for the consolation charitable organizations.
“For the first time ever, we are inviting the city of San Antonio and all fans of the tournament to attend the AT&T Championship at no charge,” said Tournament Director, Colby Callaway. “While it is a win for the attendees, it is also a big win for the non-profit organizations that we are supporting.”
During Snapple Gate Days admission is free to all spectators, all week. If you did not receive a complimentary ticket prior to the day you wish to attend, simply park in the “free” spectator lot, and jump on a courtesy shuttle for a ride to the front gate. Tickets will be distributed at the front gate on the days of Championship play. Please note that no ticket is necessary during practice days and Pro-Amateur events scheduled Monday through Thursday.
The AT&T Championship is scheduled to take place on October 25-31, 2010, at the historic Oak Hills Country Club. For more information about the tournament and sponsorship information, call 210-698-3582. Additional details regarding the Charity Ticket Program and free admission can be found at www.attchamp.com.

About Charlie Baron
Charlie Baron spent the better part of 22 years as the driving force behind the PGA Tour’s annual stop in Las Vegas. In that time, he helped the Las Vegas Founders raise millions of dollars for local charities and contribute significantly to the Las Vegas economy as some of the biggest names on the PGA Tour - Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and others - roamed the fairways. Baron had a couple of top memories in his years organizing the tournament, including Chip Beck’s fabled 59 in 1991 at Sunrise Country Club and Tiger Woods’ first PGA Tour victory, coming in 1996. Baron also helped run countless men’s and women’s collegiate tournaments over the years and was also involved in AJGA golf tournaments held around the Las Vegas valley.
In his words: “I am honored to be recognized as part of the golf history in Las Vegas. I had the pleasure of working with many Las Vegans during my 22 years in the community and we accomplished many goals over the years that benefitted numerous organizations.”
About Joe Kelly
Joe Kelly has been a resident of Las Vegas for over 30 years and during that time, he has lent his considerable talents to many local golf courses including Dessert Inn Country Club, Las Vegas Country Club, Desert Pines, Sunrise Country Club, Stallion Mountain, Royal Links, Bali Hai and most recently, Sun City Summerlin’s three courses; Palm Valley, Highland Falls and Eagle Crest. Kelly has also contributed much of his time for the betterment of the community. He is a Founding Father of the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association, sits on the boards of the First Tee of Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame. In his words: “As a PGA Club Professional it is probably the highest honor that can be bestowed upon you. To be recognized by the Las Vegas golfing community is very special. It is a great honor for me and also my family.”
About the Tournament of Champions
The original Tournament of Champions was played in Las Vegas in 1953, and the event continues on the PGA Tour to this day, now called the SBS Championship and played in Hawaii. Champions of the event when it was held in Las Vegas include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler and many other golf greats.
"The Tournament of Champions was the Pre-eminent Las Vegas and Nevada event for many years, bringing the eyes of the world to Las Vegas, right from the beginning when it debuted in 1953," says Jack Sheehan, Las Vegas golf author, historian and 2009 Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inductee. "The event drew the biggest names in golf and biggest Hollywood stars to Las Vegas, and was created by Las Vegas' movers and shakers including Moe Dalitz, Irwin Molasky, Howard Capps, Merv Adelson, Wilbur Clarke, and Allard Roen, among others. Roen served as the Director of the TOC for 38 years, including after it moved to La Costa, the San Diego resort which was built by the same group who operated the Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas. To this day, the event is played on the PGA Tour, but its roots date back to 1953 when Al Besselink collected his $10,000 first prize in a wheelbarrow full of silver dollars."
